OK I made a separate topic as the other topic should really be confined to actual doujin or original art exhibitors.
DO has historically had a display area for figures/figmas/DDs.
I know that some others have questioned why have a figure display at all for a doujin event?
Straight answer is "I dunno"
- A similar question is "why have cosplayers at a doujin event?" "I dunno"
But, hey DO is kinda manga/anime celebration on the side while also providing a showcase for some homegrown talent.
So lets accept there will be some kind of figure display for the moment
I like figures and I collect figures and the DO display reminds me of the ones I own, the ones I kick myself for "zooomg why didnt I buy that when I had the chance???" and "zomg where did you get that one from??"
- And one day I will persuade/bribe/slaughter Mark for his Murata figure collection.
The display at DO has been populated from the collections of a number of people who are grateful/keen/happy/anxious to show them (some of them like me have to rotate our displays at home cuz we run out of room) or just have em in boxes and DO is a nice time to give em a dust off and showcase a few. In the absence of any real guidance we offer up some of the particular items that tickle our fancy at the time and just wheel those out on the day - so its calculated but fairly random.
We get some great figures - we also get a few double ups.
Question is: What do people want to see on display this year?
We had Haruhi overload last year including just about every bunny Haruhi figure ever. So, - For me..... Enuf Haruhi!
For me themewise: Touhou seems very topical this year as does Strike Witches and K-On and there have been some lovely figures made from those recently.
We could get Nork to display his Naughty-Icki-Tousen Kanu/Rymou uber figure shrine but DO is supposed to be a family event.....
Kin has expressed an interest to see other collectors Dollfies. I personally like mine very much but they are also quite large in comparison and more than just a handful will tend to dominate a busy figure display. So I'll bring a couple of mine at most. |

The fig display in the past has been pretty but it has lacked a degree of focus. Nice that people probably are now thinking about a theme. |

| ChobitS (in the other thread) wrote: | You can argue most of the newer anime are more pop-like and heavily focused on fan-services, but it is what ppl want to see...unfortunate. And the lack of originality for character is very sad, whatever you see now is usually just a blend of what is popular for character design.
I hope I will be able to see something as unique as Haibane Renmei before 2012. Worst case scenario...

Oh ho? What's this...some contradiction?
EDIT: I'll let it slide this time. |

Are video games figures acceptable? If so, I can contribute with my Aegis (Persona 3) figma. |

I wouldn't class Mio and Azusa as blend characters for fan service. they are more like simplified moe eye-candy; also the animation/music is great quality for K-ON. (you can't compare K-ON to brainless fan service series like nyankoi or kampfer)
And I do watch them, it is what they provide on the market. So if there is no innovative piece available, I choose to watch the fun cute moe stuff.
As for the figure display, for general audience. The cute highschool girl with musical instrument probably have more appeal to the audience than a bubblegum crisis figure. |

Now you've done it.
| ChobitS wrote: | | I wouldn't class Mio and Azusa as blend characters for fan service. they are more like simplified moe eye-candy | You're only digging yourself into a deeper hole here. Eye candy is a form of fan service.
| Quote: | | ; also the animation/music is great quality for K-ON. (you can't compare K-ON to brainless fan service series like nyankoi or kampfer) | This is all subjective. We're not just talking about fan service here, lack of originality as well. "Worst case scenario".
| Quote: | | And I do watch them, it is what they provide on the market. So if there is no innovative piece available, I choose to watch the fun cute moe stuff. | Don't go spouting complaints about the current state of the market then, it's because of people like you that it exists.
| Quote: | | As for the figure display, for general audience. The cute highschool girl with musical instrument probably have more appeal to the audience than a bubblegum crisis figure. | How's that any incentive for a good chunk of people going to the event, that are not into what you're into, to embrace this 'moe pantsu figure fest'?
*looks up at top post*
I'm falling on deaf ears here. |
